First Marine Coordinators programme delivered at Humber Maritime College

Humber Maritime College based at the Modal Training Centre delivered their first Marine Coordinators programme last week.

The unique training programme was held over five consecutive days and delivered by Master Mariner, Capt. Mike Jubb.

The course was designed to develop the knowledge of both existing and new entrant Marine Coordinators within the offshore wind sector. It utilises the best practice from the G+/Energy Institute to ensure delegates attain the competencies set out in ‘The safe management of small service vessels used in the offshore wind industry’ guidelines.

Delivered through an active learning style, delegates covered a range of modules including:

• Roles and Responsibilities of a Marine Coordinator
• Marine and wind farm legislation
• Marine Operations (meteorology, COLREGS,buoyage, passage planning, and vessel inspection)
• Control of work, passengers and cargo in a wind farm
• Emergency response requirements
• Human element and management of change.

The course concludes with delegates taking part in an exercise using Humber Maritime College’s state of the art
marine simulators.

Delegates came from the Humber region and abroad to join the programme. Trevor Bell who attended from Rix Shipping said ” The experience was above and beyond our expectations. I would highly recommend those involved in Marine Co-ordination sector to attend the programme, irrespective of whether or not they’re experienced or a new starter. I have worked in the sector for many years and it certainly refreshed my skills and emphasised the importance of safety both on land and at sea.”

Humber Maritime College’s Mike Jubb added “We designed the course specifically to help those in the Offshore Wind sector dealing with Marine Co-ordination. It’s especially aids the Humber wind energy based businesses to upskill their Marine teams. Utilising the simulators gives some authenticity to the content we share with delegates”.

The course is attracting interest from across the sector and bookings have started for the next programme on Monday 13th January 2020.
